SPRING 2014 EVENTS
POOL THE FUN(DS)
Have your ride cleaned by donation and enjoy a meal inside Church's Chicken using the complimentary coupons we've provided! All donations received and proceeds from our freezie sale went towards providing incentives towards better global childhood education and advocating for children's rights! |
WALK FOR WATER 2014
UNICEF SFU held a Walk for Water in the Summer of 2014. This walk emulated the daily trek that many children in developing countries undergo to bring water home from the distant water pumps. Participants hiked the Trans-Canada Trail and the Cardiac Trail towards Burnaby Mountain Park, while carrying water bottles in drawstring bags. We then held a BBQ in the Convocation Mall afterwards, where everything was sold out! |
UNISTRETCH
Students could take a breather from exam prep and relax with us in an hour-long yoga class in Convo Mall, led by an instructor from SFU Recreation. Refreshments and water were served and yoga mats were also provided by SFU Rec (if you didn't have your own). All funds raised were donated towards the UNICEF Water Project, a global campaign working to provide clean water and adequate sanitation to children around the world. UNICEF works in more than 100 countries around the world to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities and to promote safe hygiene practices. |
"EDUCATE TO ELIMINATE" CARNIVAL
In March, we organized our annual carnival, featuring School Building Schools (SBS) and Amnesty International SFU, in the Convocation Mall. This year focused on the international right to education. Students participated in a bungee run and educational game booths, while enjoying the BBQ, free cotton candy and popcorn, and a live DJ. Click HERE to take a look at the photos from the event! |
"TO SYRIA WITH LOVE" BENEFIT DINNER
Since the beginning of the war, over four million Syrian children have had to flee their homes. As UNHCR High commissioner António Guterres stated "what is at stake is nothing less than the survival and well-being of generations of innocents." UNICEF SFU represents Canada's future generation of bright minds and leaders. This event brought communities together while raising awareness about another generation of youth who deserve a future. Syria's children cannot become another "lost generation" because as UNICEF believes "every child deserves every opportunity no exceptions." |
STICK-IT TO EXPLOITATION
This advocacy event happened in Saywell Hall where students gathered to find hundreds of post-it notes filling the panel windows, packed with facts related to human exploitation. Students shared this event with their peers through social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to spread awareness about the mistreatment of people globally. |
FALL 2013 EVENTS
TYPHOON HAIYAN RELIEF In support of the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, the SFSS, UNICEF SFU and the SFU Red Cross Club held a fundraiser in Convocation Mall. Students could stop by and de-stress with us with delicious BBQ, hot chocolate, cookies, a heated lounge area, and music! All proceeds will be donated to UNICEF Canada and the Canadian Red Cross. Additionally, every dollar raised will be TRIPLED thanks to generous donation-matching provided by the federal/provincial government, as well as Loblaw's. |
KISSES 4 A WISH 2013
Just in time for the Christmas festivities, this fundraiser raised over $350 with proceeds going towards a “School-in-a-Box” survival gift. Students gathered to hang personal wishes onto the community “Wishing Wall,” and participated in tweeting and instagramming pictures of the event. Donations were received in exchange for cookies and hot chocolate. As well, we released our very own UNICEF elves and reindeers around the school to surprise diligent students with free Hershey Kisses! |
EDUCATE TO ELIMINATE: BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY
Education is the key to ending the cycle of poverty, therefore, we invited students in an evening of awareness in human rights and international development! We screened the film, "Time for School - Hope and Despair in the Fight for an Education," part 3 of Wide Angle's time for School series and also offered free sushi, pizza, snacks, and beverages. |
KEEP CALM AND HAVE A CUPCAKE UNICEF SFU loves sweets and we were sure that other SFU students would too! We held an autumn bake sale to raise funds towards the UNICEF themes: Education and Advocacy. With amazing volunteers who helped bake awesome treats from Cookie Monster Cupcakes to Delectable Brownies and helped to take on the shifts throughout the week, the event was a big success which raised over $400! |

SUMMER 2013 EVENTS
SHINE YOUR RIDE: CAR WASH
If your vehicle lacked a little shine, you could get your ride cleaned by UNICEF SFU! All of our volunteers dressed in Hawaiian-themed decor to celebrate the sunshine and show off our enthusiasm. All profits went towards child survival interventions, where UNICEF's Child Survival initiatives focused on reducing child mortality. They're also designed to combat the most common causes of child deaths, including malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, and neonatal conditions. |
